Nathan Richards, an illustrator and cartoonist, has seen a surge in fan interest after unveiling his collection of Fremantle Dockers tattoos at Optus Stadium following the team’s victory over Geelong.
“[I] turned my phone off and woke up in the morning and it was a bit of a surprise. It was almost instantly comment[ing], direct messages, people wanting to book in the next day and the same week. It’s been massive, it’s a really cool reaction,” Richards told Luke Sharp LIVE listeners.
A lifelong Dockers fan, Richards grew up as part of the Fremantle community.
During a ZOOM interview, he revealed his latest artwork ahead of Fremantle’s first grand final appearance in 13 years.
The new designs feature a prancing pony, a unicorn, and anchors—all rendered in Fremantle’s signature purple.
Why are fans rushing to get inked? Richards believes the club’s 31-year wait for a premiership is a driving factor.
“We’ve been waiting for 31 years now, since the club started. They’ve been following for so long, just like waiting, sort of like an underdog community,” he said.
