As previously reported, the British musician used his concert in Philadelphia to apologise to fans and clarify his stance on the war, which began following the October 7 2023 terrorist attack in Israel.
“My heart has been broken by the scale of devastation and loss of civilians’ lives, of children’s lives. The systemic injustice we’re seeing unfold in the West Bank cannot be overlooked,” he told the sold-out crowd.
Mulcrone took issue with the tactics used to pressure the ‘Shape of You’ singer into taking a public stance.
“Ed holding these views is not the issue. I tend to agree with much of what he’s saying and, like him, my heart broke when I saw footage of the Nova music festival.
“My frustration stems from the idea that if we harass, intimidate and ‘cancel’ people enough they will be forced to divulge their stance on a political issue or publicly back the viewpoint of the loudest in the room,” he said.
He argued that the singer appeared uncomfortable on stage while addressing what he described as the “most complex political issue on the planet.”
“Sharing his views on this clearly wasn’t something he wanted to do willingly, but to save face he spoke out,” he said.
He concluded with his own perspective:
“Finally, here’s something I would like people to consider, and consider it strongly. Israel has the right to exist and its people have the right to live their lives in peace and security. And Palestinians have the right to their own state, free from Israeli governance. They also have the right to live without fear of violence.
“I just expressed an opinion, but unlike some I wasn’t being forced to share it.”
