CW: Sexual assault
The Sydney Swans have issued a statement confirming the club’s board will meet tonight to determine sanctions and penalties for players linked to an alleged sexual assault.
Victoria Police confirmed on Monday they are investigating a report of sexual assault in East Melbourne.
The Swans later confirmed “several players” were involved in an incident at an East Melbourne hotel.
While the club has not publicly named the players, they are reported to be Isaac Heeney, Chad Warner, James Jordon and Riley Bice.
It is not suggested that any of the four players are being accused of sexual assault.
After conducting interviews with the involved players, the club “believes the players are in serious breach of expected Club behaviour and standards” and says it is “appropriate to take firm action”.
“The Sydney Swans condemn all forms of abuse and disrespectful behaviour towards women. Any conduct that causes offence or harm to others is unacceptable and falls well short of our expectations. All women deserve to be respected and feel safe,” the statement read.
More to come.
